Troubleshooting.

When loading the Gatekeeper add-in I get a 'Could not load some objects because they are not available on this machine' warning message.

This problem is due to an old version of the file MSCOMCTL.OCX on your machine.  Gatekeeper uses the Treeview control from this ActiveX control file and if the correct version is not found on your machine you will get the above error message - parts of Gatekeeper will not work.  You can solve this problem by replacing the file on your machine with the correct version, to do this follow the instructions below.

***WARNING*** The following instructions will tell you how to replace a system file, other applications might depend on the same file and by replacing it you might break and/or cause them to crash.  If you choose to follow these steps keep in mind that YOU ARE DOING IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.

  • Close any open Excel session/s;
  • Locate the MSCOMCTL.OCX file on your system and rename it to MSCOMCTL.OCX.old (this is normally found under the 'SYSTEM32' folder);
  • A copy of the correct MSCOMCTL.OCX file is included in the add-in download file under the folder ~\Gatekeeper\ActiveX_File\;
  • Copy the MSCOMCTL.OCX included in the download file to the same folder containing MSCOMCTL.OCX.old;
  • Register the new file by running the following command: regsvr32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\mscomctl.ocx    (replace the path 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\' the correct path on your system);
  • Open Excel, and this time you should not get the error message again.
